SportsWrap:
Pennsbury, Neshaminy, CR North,
CR South still alive on the gridiron

Pennsbury senior Davonte Washington turns it upfield in last week's action vs. Neshaminy.
There are only a few varsity teams left playing in postseason action this time of year.
The Council Rock North girls volleyball team, this year's District One-AAA runner-up, won handily last night in the first round of states, outpacing Girls High 25-5, 25-6 and 25-9.
Senior setter Jackie Davies led the way with 19 assists, 5 kills and 6 digs. Sarah Kiely pitched in with 7 kills, 10 digs and 2 blocks. Caroline Anderson added 6 kills, 2 blocks and 5 digs. Rachel Friedman also contributed 8 kills to the Rock's state playoff win.
The Lady Indians move on to pool play on Friday Nov. 13 against Mount Lebanon, Allentown Central Catholic and the winner of Cardinal O'Hara and Spring Grove.
The Archbishop Wood girls fell Nov. 10 in their state soccer opener against Villa Jo Marie as the Jems took a 2-1 halftime lead on goals by Emily Market and Becky Pfender. A goal by Vikings midfielder Christine Ferrelle kept Wood in the game at the intermission but a goal after the break by Dominique Ponente sealed VJM's 3-1 victory.
Jems keeper Courtney Shaw made 7 saves for the Villa. Alyson Hop made 3 stops for the Vikings.
Pennsbury suffered a 2-1 loss Nov. 10 in its state field hockey opener against Emmaus. Sophomore Allie Brady scored the lone goal for the Falcons, who finished fifth in the district this year.
District One sub-regional action begins this Friday night in football with Pennsbury, Neshaminy, Council Rock South and Council Rock North facing off against some familiar, some unfamiliar foes.
At 7 p.m., Pennsbury will host Unionville, a team they have yet to play against this season. The SOL National champion Falcons went 9-1 this season, finishing with a 27-20 OT thriller against league runner-up Neshaminy. The Redskins host SOL National rival Abington. The Galloping Ghosts defeated the Redskins, 28-24, in a week four battle in Abington. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CR North will go up against North Penn, a team they shared a league rivalry with last season. The Knights went unbeaten in reclaiming the Continental Conference this year so Friday's game could get ugly fast. North Penn romped in every game it played this season including a season opening win over Bethlehem Liberty, a team that went to the Eastern Conference championship a year ago. CB South was the only team to keep the deficit under three touchdowns, and they lost 27-7 on their home turf.
Seeded 10th, Council Rock South might have a better time with No. 7 Ridley but they'll have to beat the Green Hornets down in Delaware County. That may be a daunting task but the Hawks have had to prove their mettle in previous match-ups this season.
Here's hoping they're able to do it again.

Mee named Northeast-10 Setter of the Week

Bentley University junior Kelly Mee, a Council Rock High School South alum from Ivyland, has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Volleyball Setter of the Week for her outstanding performance in a pair of road matches last week.
Mee, in victories at Saint Rose and Le Moyne that secured the number three seed for Bentley in the upcoming conference playoffs, filled the stat sheet with averages of 10.43 assists, 1.29 blocks, 1.14 kills and 1.0 digs.
The six-footer amassed 30 kills, three blocks, three digs and three kills in a 3-0 sweep of Saint Rose, and accumulated 43 assists, six blocks, five kills, four digs and two aces in a 3-1 win at Le Moyne.
Mee is currently fifth in the Northeast-10 in assists, averaging 9.3, and amongst the conference’s setters, is tied for first in kills and is fourth in blocks. She’s averaged at least 10 assists per set in five of the team’s last seven matches after doing so only seven times in the season’s first 20 matches.
Bentley, 16-11, will take on Le Moyne College this Friday at 5 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 playoffs at UMass-Lowell.

Big weekend in Bucks football

Neshaminy at Pennsbury, CR North vs. South tonight
By Rick Fortenbaugh
For BucksLocalSports.com

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say there’s probably never been a night quite like this in the annals of Lower Bucks County scholastic football.
At the top of the list, of course, is the Neshaminy at Pennsbury game tonight in front of a monster crowd at Falcon Field.
All that’s on the line here is the Suburban One National League championship, bragging rights in Lower Bucks football and probably the No. 2 seed for the District 1 Class AAAA playoffs.
Next up is the Council Rock South at Council Rock North game. This is also a huge rivalry with all kinds of playoff implications. Rock South has already garnered its first playoff spot in the young history of its program, while Rock North will be looking to make sure it gets its second.
The amazing thing is there’s an excellent chance the Suburban One National League could very well end up with five of the 16 Class AAAA playoff berths. For one league to have nearly a third of the field is both impressive and probably unprecedented.
It doesn’t stop there, however. Conwell-Egan will play in the first round of the Philadelphia Catholic League Class AAA playoffs this evening, while Bristol and Morrisville have road games that also have playoff implications.
***
Neshaminy (8-1) at Pennsbury (8-1), tonight, 7 p.m. — It really is anybody’s guess how this will go. Although Pennsbury wiped out its first eight opponents by wide margins, somehow it often didn’t look all that impressive. Sure enough, the Falcons stumbled on the road at Abington last week. The only losses for both Neshaminy and Pennsbury were to Abington. What makes this is strange is Abington also lost to both Council Rocks. If Abington coach “Tiny’’ Tim Sorber hadn’t messed up his timeouts against Rock South, his Ghosts would also be playing for a league title tonight against Truman. Neshaminy-Pennsbury can go either way. This will be about turnovers, execution and catching a break or two along the way.
***
Council Rock South (7-2) at Council Rock North (6-3), tonight, 7 p.m. — It will also be jumping in Newtown as the sister schools wage their latest war in a series that has been dominated by the unexpected. Rock South is more of a ball-control team; Rock North is the better passing team. Both defenses have been similar, although Rock North has really turned it on of late by crushing Abington on the road and coming up one point shy against Neshaminy on Heartbreak Ridge. Like Pennsbury-Neshaminy, don’t even bother trying to analyze or handicap this cross-town collision.
***
Conwell-Egan (5-4) vs. North Catholic (4-4) at Plymouth-Whitemarsh, tonight, 7 p.m. — North Catholic beat the Eagles in the regular season two weeks ago by the score of 19-15 in a contest that could have gone either way. Conwell-Egan is coming off a game in which Kerry McAnany scored four touchdowns. The Eagles are also looking for a semifinal playoff victory for the second year in a row.
***
Bristol (5-3) at Lower Moreland (6-3), tonight, 7 p.m. — The records are similar, but it’s Bristol that would appear to be a pretty solid favorite. The Warriors, who are currently in the fourth spot for a playoff berth, have been peaking and just crushed Springfield-Montco. Lower Moreland lost to Springfield and had its hands full in an earlier game at Morrisville. The home team is also fighting for a playoff berth, but it’s Bristol with the better talent.
***
Abington (6-2) at Truman (2-7), tonight, 7:30 p.m. — Despite missing out on some power points when a team backed out of a game earlier in the year, Abington looks to be in good shape for the playoffs as it enters tonight’s game in the ninth spot. Truman has made some progress this year under new coach John Iannunci. It’s also possible Abington may have a bit of a letdown after beating Pennsbury, keeping the score close.
***
Morrisville (5-4) at Conrad Science (0-7), tomorrow, 11 a.m. — This a repeat of a game from earlier in the season in which Mo’ville won, 47-0. Unless the Delaware team has gotten a sudden influx of last-minute talent, look for more of the same from a Morrisville team that will be able to do anything it wants.
***
William Tennent (1-8) at Bensalem (2-7), tonight, 7 p.m. — If nothing else, this represents a good chance for the Owls to finish up strong. (Bensalem is scheduled to play Norristown next week, but Norristown is in the playoffs). In fact, it’s a very good chance. The Tennent coaches do what they can, but some of the Panthers look like they belong on a JV field.

SORBER’S CIRCUS:
Abington coach could be quite the spectacle as Ghosts take on Pennsbury

By Rick Fortenbaugh
For BucksLocalSports

Warning: Do not attend tonight’s Pennsbury at Abington football game if you have high blood pressure, are prone to anxiety attacks, or can’t control your temper.
Reason: Abington coach “Tiny’’ Tim Sorber is sure to infuriate you with his endless whining, screaming, ranting, moaning, crying and begging for penalties against the Falcons.
Yes, it’s time for top-ranked Pennsbury (8-0) to take it on the road to a town that has about as much class as its coach.
In other words, none.
In Pennsbury’s last game at Abington, the Falcons lost in overtime when a foaming Sorber went absolutely ballistic on the refs.
Also that evening, an Abington fan was hauled away for assaulting a Pennsbury student and several Abington players were later suspended for repeatedly kicking a Pennsbury player as he lay on their sideline.
Heck, just last year the out-of-control Sorber could be seen verbally going at it with a Pennsbury fan during halftime at Falcon field.
Since the PIAA and District 1 have made no attempt to discipline Sorber, he probably has already started to make sure tonight’s refs are on board with the Galloping Ghosts. And if he hasn’t already, look for Sorber to start working the refs right around the coin flip.
It truly is pathetic, but as Pennsbury found out the last time it went to Abington, sometimes intimidating the refs works. Suffice it to say, the Falcons were the victims of one of the biggest hose jobs in the long and sad history of hometown high school football officiating.
Possibly making tonight even more stressful is the fact that it could be a pretty good game. Although Abington has lost to both Council Rocks, it also owns a 5-2 record and a victory over powerful Neshaminy. The Ghosts also desperately need this game to make the playoffs.
A playoff berth isn’t a problem for Pennsbury, currently the No. 1 seed in District 1 and ranked in the top five of Pennsylvania. A victory tonight would also assure Pennsbury of at least a tie for its first league title since 1993.
Pennsbury has been dominating all year. It has given up only 40 points overall and its first-team defense has allowed just three touchdowns. The last touchdown drive against the Falcon defense traveled exactly two yards.
Another thing to watch is the matchup between Pennsbury’s defense and Abington’s prolific passing game. Other than in the 34-3 loss to Rock North, Abington has posted big offensive numbers all season.
Of course, Abington has also allowed big offensive numbers, which could be trouble against a Pennsbury running game that is among the best in the entire district.
***
Calvary Christian (6-1) at Morrisville (5-3), tonight, 7 p.m.: This does not look good for the Dawgies. Calvary Christian has scored more than 40 points in three straight games and owns a fairly convincing win over Bristol. Coach Mike Reichebach’s son can throw the ball, CC has a good running game and it also plays some defense. Morrisville has come back to earth as the quality of its schedule has improved.
***
Springfield Montco (2-6) at Bristol (4-3), tonight, 7 p.m.: The Warriors have played much better the last two weeks after a stretch of mediocre football. With playoff implications also involved, there’s no reason to see that trend stopping tonight.
***
Bensalem (2-6) at Neshaminy (7-1), tonight, 7 p.m.:The Owls always come to play, but there’s just not enough talent to get it done against good teams. And make no mistake about it, Neshaminy is a good team. Redskins coach Mark Schmidt will also make sure his team isn’t caught looking ahead to next week’s game at Pennsbury. If Neshaminy wins tonight, it can gain at least a share of a league title next week. The Redskins are also right in the hunt for a very high playoff seed.
***
Archbishop Ryan (0-8) at Conwell-Egan (4-4), Saturday, 7 p.m.: Although Ryan plays by far the tougher schedule, the fact remains it hasn’t won a game yet. Ryan probably figures this is a good shot to get in the victory column, but there’s no reason to think Conwell-Egan won’t play relaxed, loose and well as it gets ready for the playoffs.
***
Truman (2-6) at Council Rock North (5-3), Saturday, 1:30 p.m.: Once again, this is another game in which one team is playing for a lot more than the other. In this case, Rock North is still very much in the playoff picture despite its tough one-point loss at Neshaminy last week. A Rock North win makes next week’s already huge game against Rock South even bigger.

It Takes Two
Council Rock South tennis twins
a perfect match on the court

By Steve Sherman
Sports Editor

To some, Council Rock North sophomores Dara and Erika Pinkus look like sisters. Others might not see it. The fact of the matter is that the former group would be correct in their assessment. The girls are fraternal twins currently playing at No. 2 doubles for the Lady Indians.
Erika is older (by a minute) but Dara is taller with darker hair and complexion.
Sometimes, people say, “Oh, you look identical but sometimes, people think we’re just best friends so we get a lot of different answers,” said Dara after she and her sister disposed of their William Tennent foes, 6-2, 6-2.
The Pinkus twins lost to Wissahickon but are winning most of their matches in the Suburban One League (SOL), says Dara, who has been playing tennis since she was just 5-years-old.
Last year, the twins wanted to try out for Rock varsity tennis but were not around for tryouts as the girls had not returned from their summer vacation in time for preseason practice. The twins made sure they were back in time this season.
The sophomores say they’re enjoying their play together on the varsity tennis courts.
“I like it a lot,” stated Erika, “because we know each other so well and we know each other’s techniques.”
While Dara uses better strokes on the forehand; Erika is superior to her sister on the backhand. Dara has a stronger serve but she, admittedly, tends to double fault.
“I have a more powerful serve but Erika—she is more consistent with it, to be honest.
“It just works,” stated Dara. “We don’t have to fight for which side we want to hit on so it works out really well.”
The twins had a close match with sister school Council Rocvk South they still won 6-4, 6-4 against the Hawks’ No. 2 doubles team of Rachel Ghoens and Marissa Ravn.
“It was under pressure but it felt really good to win that match,” stated Erika.
Here’s one benefit of playing a varsity sport with your sibling you may not have considered.
“I can get mad at her,” said Erika, “and I like that.”
Sibling rivalry aside, Erika says she and her sister are a perfect match on the tennis court.
“I have better skills than she has [in some areas] and she has better skills than I have [in other areas,” said Erika.
“We just really work well together.
“We go together and it’s good.

Council Rock is part of key Bucks clashes

By Rick Fortenbaugh
For BucksLocalSports.com

While this week’s schedule is not as attractive as the last, there are some games that will still generate a lot of interest on the Lower Bucks County scholastic football slate.
Two of the bigger ones involve the Council Rock schools with Rock South looking to rebound from its first loss when it hosts Bensalem tonight and Rock North hoping to extend its three-game winning streak at Pennsbury’s Homecoming tomorrow night.
Also of interest are a pair of non-league games involving Morrisville and Bristol.
***
Bensalem (2-2) at Council Rock South (3-1), tonight, 7 p.m.:
The Owls ended a two-game losing streak when they beat Truman last week, while Rock South suffered its first loss in an away game at Pennsbury. This has the potential to go down to the last minute. Bensalem’s offense is still not where coach Dan McShane would no doubt like it to be, but the Owls had a strong second half against Truman. Rock South, meanwhile, has just two touchdowns in its last two games, including the dramatic escape against Conwell-Egan. If Bensalem can stop the triple option and give its offense enough chances, a minor upset could very well result.
***
Truman (1-3) at Neshaminy (3-1), tonight, 7 p.m.:
As if this wasn’t a tough enough assignment, John Iannucci’s Tigers will be up against a Neshaminy squad that will be looking to wash away the taste of its first defeat. That came at undefeated Abington, where a furious Redskins rally in the fourth quarter came up just short. Truman can play some defense, but it’s offense is still far from upper-tier Suburban One National League standards. It’s just hard to see much excitement on The Ridge tonight.
***
Pennington (1-2 ) at Bristol (3-0) tonight, 7 p.m.:
George Gatto’s Warriors lost this game last year and you can be sure they’ve been reminded of that all week. Pennington has a nice passing game headed up by junior Keith Dearden (nearly 300 yards last week) and a decent running game featuring ex-Pennsbury back Malcolm Perry. A week ago, Pennington lost to Calvary Christian, 29-28, when it came up short on a gutsy attempt for a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter. Most people consider Bristol to be superior to Calvary Christian, so that’s good for the Warriors. There will be some points tonight, but look for Bristol back Woodrow Vorters to make the difference.
***
New Hope (0-3) at Morrisville (3-1) tonight, 7 p.m.:
Look for more offensive fireworks at the historic Robert Morris Stadium from Dawgie quarterback Matt Cookson and Co.. Morrisville lost its first game last week, but the setback came in a 33-26 thriller against Lower Moreland in one of the Dawgies’ best efforts in years. New Hope opened some eyes by playing Bristol tough in the first game in the history of its program, but it’s been back to reality for the Lions ever since. In that stretch was a loss to Princeton Day, which Morrisville hammered, 37-7.
***
Council Rock North (3-1) at Pennsbury (4-0), tomorrow, 7 p.m.:
It’s Homecoming Night at Pennsbury and there’s sure to be a huge crowd unless the weather really stinks. The numbers tell the story of what the Indians are up against. Pennsbury has avalanched its four opponents by a combined score of 130-22 and its first-team defense has allowed just 10 points. Making matters worse for Rock North is the fact Pennsbury showed a nice run/pass balance last week. Rock has a strong passing game with quarterback Tyler Hamilton, but Pennsbury also has an excellent secondary. Throw in the depth factor and Rock North is a big underdog despite its record.
***
Neumann-Goretti (0-3) at Conwell-Egan (2-2), tomorrow, 7 p.m:
Although the injury bug has continued to hit Conwell-Egan with standout wide receiver Ryan Bond the latest to get dinged up, the Eagles shouldn’t have many problems with this Saturday night foe at the Hank Morgan Stadium. Among Goretti’s losses was a setback to Cardinal Dougherty, which Egan just handled, 28-7, just last week. As Council Rock South can testify, Conwell-Egan does play some tough defense and it’s hard to throw on the Eagles.

FIELD HOCKEY:
CR South suffers first loss under new coach

By Steve Sherman
Sports Editor

Pennsbury got a pair of goals from Ashlyn Stevens to stay undefeated in the Suburban One League (SOL) National Conference last Friday at Council Rock South.
The Lady Falcons trailed the Golden Hawks, 1-0, when Stevens recorded her first goal off a feed from senior Danielle Geller. The score was tied at two goals apiece when Stevens tallied the game-winner off a feed from senior MF Mia Reed with just three minutes to go in the Sept. 25 contest.
CR South scored early in this one when Sarah Brotman scored just six minutes into the battle off a feed from Kayla Hempel, giving the Hawks a 1-0 halftime edge.
But Pennsbury scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half to go ahead, 2-1, before senior Maria Karidas tied it up for South off a feed from Brotman. Karidas is the area’s leading scorer with 11 goals and 2 assists.
Reed recorded the second goal for the Falcons off a feed from Allie Brady and Pennsbury recorded 7 shots and 9 corner opportunities, scoring all three of its goals on corners.
With the win, the Falcons pushed their record to 6-2, overall, 5-0 in the SOL National Conference. South, meanwhile, dropped to 5-1 overall, 4-1 in the SOL.
Under the guidance of first-year skipper Lisa DeFeo (pictured above, CRHS--Class of ‘97), who took over the program from longtime coach Pat Toner, the Hawks are holding their own in the SOL with wins over league rivals Truman (7-0), Neshaminy (1-0), Bensalem (5-0), and Abington (3-1). South also holds a season-opening triumph over non-league rival CB East whom they defeated 2-0.
***
Toner led the Hawks from the team’s inception in the fall of 2002. She is currently assisting the CR North field hockey team.

Mee fills stat sheet in Bentley win

Bentley junior setter Kelly Mee (pictured, left), a Council Rock South alum from Ivyland, had a strong overall match, with her numbers including 36 assists and six kills, as Bentley University rebounded from a slow start to top Queens College, 3-1, Friday Sept. 18 at the Dana Center as part of the Northeast-10/East Coast Conference Women’s Volleyball Challenge.
After dropping the first game, 22-25, Bentley rebounded with wins of 25-7, 25-15 and 25-12.

Dziewa does well at East Coast Duals

Competing for his Keystone Brawlers Wrestling Club, Council Rock South senior 140-pounder Josh Dziewa (pictured, right) posted a 4-1 record recently at the National High School Coaches Association's (NHSCA) 10th annual East Coast Wrestling Duals, falling in the final team bout to SEPA's Shane Springer on a disqualification. A former state qualifier for Pennsbury High School who transferred to South last year, Dziewa was not permitted to wrestle for the Golden Hawks last season.
Pennsylvania's Renegade Force took the High School Division title, with Shore Thing White of New Jersey taking the Middle School Division title and Central Pennsylvania the Elementary Division crown in the East Coast Duals May 22-25 at the Wicomico Youth Civic Center in Salisbury.
"The level of competition at this year's National Wrestling Duals was the best yet," NHSCA executive director Bob Ferraro Jr. said. "The bracket round was outstanding. Every match had everybody on the edge of their seat. The matches were outstanding in all three divisions."
In his two seasons at Pennsbury, Josh complied over 90 vrasity wins going 47-4 as a 125-pound freshman and 44-2 as a 130-pound sophomore, making it to states in each of those campaigns. Now a grapplers for the Hawks, Dziewa is looking forward to capping off his career at CR South.

Citko to represent Bucks in east-west clash

By Steve Sherman
Sports Editor

Archbishop Wood senior Adam Citko (pictured, right) has been named as this area's only representative in the PSFCA East/West All-Star game. The game is slated Friday, June 19 at Mansion Park in Altoona.
In Wood's fall 2008 campaign, Citko helped the Vikings' ground attack by opening up gaping holes for the likes of running backs Sean Cunningham, Sean McCartney and Nick Devine. His efforts helped Cunningham - a second team selection - tally more than 1,700 yards on the ground and 27 touchdowns this season, one in which Wood captured it's first District 12 championship and a trip to the PIAA Class AAA title game where it fell to two-time state champion Thomas Jefferson.
For the season, McCartney compiled 683 yards on 128 rushes. Devine carried the football 75 times for 479 yards.
This is the 9th annual east-west gridiron clash. Through it, players have been awarded more than $45,000 in scholarships toward their post-secondary school education.
For the first time in its history, the battle will be staged on the same weekend as the Big 33 Football Classic, which is set for Saturday, June 20 at HersheyPark Stadium.
Speaking of which, there are three area players taking part in the annual Big 33 game which pits the best seniors Pennsy has to offer against their counterparts in Ohio. Two are from Neshaminy including Jay Colbert and Dan Shirey. Council Rock South’s Justin Pugh has also been nominated to play in the game.
Colbert is a 6-1, 233-pound defensive end who is headed to New Hampshire. Shirey is a 6-2, 275-pound offensive lineman destined for Villanova in the fall. Pugh is also an O-lineman, but for the Golden Hawks, and weighs in at 6-5, 275 pounds. Justin is going to Syracuse.

CR SOUTH:
Gilson just misses state medal

Council Rock South senior Brett Gilson tuning up for states.

Council Rock South senior Brett Gilson and John Cantwell made it to states this year for the Golden Hawk boys track & field team with Cantwell earning state berths in the long jump and the triple jump and Gilson competing in the pole vault.
Gilson was this year’s district runner-up in his craft with a vault of 14 feet, 6 inches. At the district meet held last month at Coatesville Area High School, Brett nearly cleared a height of 15 feet but couldn’t quite get there.
“I had enough height, just not enough penetration into the pit,” stated Gilson as he prepared for states. “I kept hitting the bar on my way down.”
Gilson, who is headed to Dartmouth in the fall, got himself a new 15-foot pole measuring before heading to states. “I’m real excited to use it,: stated Gilson. “It gives me more height coming off the top of it.”
With a 9th-place finish May 23 at the PIAA Class AAA meet at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium, Gilson just missed earning a state medal with his 14-foot vault.
Two others--Mitch Codd, of Seneca Valley, and Chris Dougherty, of St. Joe’s Prep--tied for seventh place medals just ahead of Gilson. They also had 14-foot vaults but attained the winning height with fewer misses than Gilson.
Cantwell, who is headed to Miami of Ohio, placed 11th in the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 2.25 inches. Muhlenberg High’s Tyrell Ellison won the event after notching 49 feet, 0.75 inches.
Cantwell earned a 12th-place finish in the long jump, reaching a mark 22 feet 1-and-1/2 inches from the start. Matt Green, of Belle Vernon High, took the top prize with his leap of 23 feet 7.5 inches.

CR SOUTH:
Worthen getting ready

On Saturday May 16 at districts, Council Rock South senior Tory Worthen broke her own District One-AAA record in the pole vault with her first place leap of 12-feet, 6 inches. Worthen's previous mark was 12-4, set in last year's district meet.
Worthen is getting ready for states, where she earned a runnerup trophy last year after notching a mark of 12-9.5. Easton's Abby Schaffer took the top prize with her record-setting vault of 13-and-a-half feet.
This season, Worthen owns the state's top vault of 12-10, a meet record mark she set May 2 at the Lady Rockers Invitational at Council Rock North.

PENNSBURY:
Falcons pound Council Rock South

Sweetland unleashes the floodgates

The rematch between the visiting Pennsbury Falcons and the home team Council Rock South Golden Hawks started as a defensive battle in the cold, drizzling rain.
Pennsbury waited until seven full minutes had elapsed from the game clock to score their first goal of the day May 5 at Council Rock South.
When Pennsbury senior attack wing Peter Sweeteland snagged a pass from Kenneth Warren lurking behind the cage and ripped a shot from up top past South netminder Sean Poritsky, it unleashed the floodgates as the Falcons went on to a 17-4 triumph.
Twenty seconds after Sweetland’s goal, freshman Luke Matthews converted a pass from classmate Calvin Hopkins to close out the opening quarter's scoring with the Falcons leading 2-0.
Pennsbury upped the ante in the second stanza by ripping off six goals to two for the Hawks to open up a six goal lead. The Falcons saw three goals each from Kenneth Warren and Shawn Caven while CR South countered with tallies from Dennis Chichkin and M. Curry, giving the Falcons a 8-2 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Falcons continued their onslaught. With attackman Calvin Hopkins on the bench with an injury from a slash, reserve attackman Danny Caggia stepped in and played huge as he pumped in three goals in the quarter, and five total in the game, to drive the Pennsbury offense.
The Falcons also received their scoring from Matt Mager (on a man-down goal), Evan Caterson, and Tommy Duess. The Hawks got their scoring on a nicely executed fast break transition goal from Matt Finor, but the Falcons remained in charge at the end of the third quarter by a 14-2 margin.
The fourth quarter saw play slow down, as the two teams fought not only each other, but the increasingly muddy field. Caggia opened the scoring after Falcon attackman Justin Merola stripped the ball from a South defender and golfed the loose ball high in the air, where Caggia caught it and ripped the shot home.
Midfielder Jake O'Hara converted 12 seconds later when Caterson won the face-off and pushed the ball quickly up-field, finding O'Hara open for the score. The Hawks never stopped playing hard the entire game, with CR South attackman Bracht dodging from behind and slicing a goal into the far corner for their final goal of the game. Pennsbury put the final capper on the game when defenseman Sean Rinko stripped the ball from a South midfielder and pushed the ball up to Falcon midfielder Max Verral, who ran the fast break into the CR South end and found Dan Caggia on the doorstep for his fifth and final goal.
The game sets up a Suburban One National showdown game today (May 6) at Abington, when the Falcons and Ghosts go head-to-head for the SOL National title.
The win puts Pennsbury at 11-6 for the year and 8-1 in the Suburban One National conference. Council Rock South is 2-11 overall and 1-6 in the Suburban One National conference.

HERSHEY — Let’s just say things did not go as planned for the Harry S Truman High School’s outstanding 103-pounder James Bak at the PIAA Class AAA State Wresting Championships.
The only senior in the bracket with a record of 39-2 coming in after winning a region title on Saturday, Feb. 28, Bak lost two straight matches on opening day of the tourney March 5, his season ending to a much-too-sudden finish.
After a scoreless 45 seconds in his opening bout with Mike Fake of Parkland, Bak was headlocked to his back in a move that cost the Tigers wrestler five points. Bak never did recover, suffering an 11-3 loss to the Parkland opponent.
It apparently was a devastating loss because Bak then dropped in a 7-2 decision to Jordan Conaway of Oxford in the first round of wrestle-backs.
The good news for Lower Bucks County is Council Rock South had four opening-round winners and Rock North had two.
Advancing from Rock South were sophomores Matt Rappo (125), and Matt Martoccio (130), along with seniors Jim Vollrath (152) and Eddie Shupe (160).
The Hawks 160-pounder posted an 11-7 decision over Jeffrey Griffith of Easton, but not before surviving a scare when he was headlocked for backpoints in the third period.
A transfer student from Pennsbury, Shupe (36-3) surpassed 100 varsity wins working the mats for South this season. Eddie was cruising along with an 11-2 lead on the Easton grappler when he tried to secure a position on top. What happened next nearly cost Shupe the match as he suddenly found himself in a war with Griffith. But Shupe managed to keep at least one shoulder off the mat in advancing to a quarterfinal bout against Cumberland Valley’s Tristan Warner (35-5).
Vollrath (34-3) needed an extra period to do it but he got past Matt Laird, of Conneaut Lake with a 3-1 decision. Rappo (37-8) pinned Dan Neff Solanco just a minute-and-a-half into the first period.
And while it was close, Martoccio (22-3) decisioned South Western’s Drew Rebling, 2-1.
Winning his wrestle-back match late Thursday night after losing in the first round was Rock South’s Bob Lavelle (171). Lavelle (33-11) dropped a tough decision in the opener in losing 4-3 to Cedar Cliff’s Clint Morrison but bounced back with a 5-2 decision over Bellefonte’s Christian Oberle.
Rock North’s opening-round winners were senior Zac Haynes (119), and junior Jamie Callender (189). Haynes (36-9) scored a 13-3 major decision over Clearfield’s Andrew Spicer. Callender (41-6) did the same in outpacing Todd Miller, of Ringgold, 15-2.
Meanwhile CR South senior Helfrich found himself in a war with Jamal Lyons of Erie Cathedral Prep. The Erie grappler outpaced Mark, 8-3, in the 145-pound division. Then in his wrestle-back, Helfrich dropped a 6-2 decision to Parkland’s Ian Heist.
In other developments, CB East seniors Devon Passman (36-7) and Bubba McGinley advanced for the Patriots. Passman scored a major decision over Erie Cathedral Prep's Jermaine Easter in winning 14-5. And McGinley edged Meadville’s Shelton Mack, 1-0.
Jon Brodzik (39-4), a 135-pounder for the Patriots, lost a major decision to Josh Kindig, of Blue Mountain but wrestled back well in pinning Tyler Parsons of Erie Cathedral Prep. Brodzik’s pin put him in a consolation bout with Austin Sommer of Northampton.
CB South 103-pounder Mike Mathis (30-4) decisioned Anthony Cabrera, of Bethlehem Liberty, 5-3 in overtime.
LaSalle heavyweight Kyle DiGiacobbe, of Southampton, lost twice via falls to Clearfield’s Sean Owen (9 seconds) and Nick Page of Kennard Dale (3:28) and was hence eliminated.
District One wrestlers posted a 25-23 record in first round matches (0-4 in the 140-pound weight class). Meanwhile, District 12 (City Public/Catholic League) wrestlers went 0-8 in their openers.
***

Day two saw a trio of Rock wrestlers advance including two from North. First, Haynes pinned Governor Mifflin’s Kyle Demain. Then, Callender posted a major on Elizabethtown’s Shane Rosenberry.
Jamie prepares for his semifinal bout against Central Mountain’s Jake Bachman. With Springfield Delco’s Andre Petroski seeded up against Central Dauphin’s Tony Dallago in the other semi, there’s still a chance to see another classic war between Petroski and Callender. While the Springfield wrestler outdueled Jamie in the district finale, Callender took the regional title from Petroski in the next round.
Haynes finds himself in a bracket that includes a bunch of grapplers from the western half of the state. Zac prepares for his semifinal bout with Blue Mountain’s Tyler Rauenzahn.
Shupe advanced to the semis with a 3-2 decision he posted over Tristan Warner, of Cumberland Valley. Vollrath and Rappo were not as fortunate as both fell in their quarterfinal bouts. First, Vollrath dropped a very close decision in falling, 3-2, to Dan Karpency, of Albert Gallatin. And Rappo got himself pinned less than 30 seconds into the third period of his quarterfinal bout with Easton’s Joseph Rizzolino.
With his chance for third place still alive, Vollrath got ready to battle Boyertown’s Tim Feroe. Also still alive was Rappo, who prepared for his consolation bout with Cardinal O’Hara’s Chris Alexander.
Lavelle meanwhile, got ready to war with Ty Wilps, of Chartiers Valley in consolations.
For the Patriots, after getting pinned by West Mifflin’s James Fleming in the quarters, Passman dropped to a consolation bout with Altoona wrestler Nik Zimmerman. McGinley also lost in the quarters via technical fall to Liberty’s Anthony Marino and had to face Monsignor Bonner’s Nick Bongard in consolations.
For the Titans, Mike Mathis lost a major decision to Central Dauphin’s Shyheim Brown and got ready to battle West Chester Rustin’s Corey McQuiston in consolations.

To no one’s surprise, lower Bucks high schools dominated last weekend’s Southeastern Regional Class AA tournament.
In all, 10 area wrestlers will be heading to states, starting with Harry S Truman senior James Bak, who captured the 103-pound regional title.
At 39-2 on the season, the Tigers lightweight went 4-0, starting with a pin of Garnet Valley’s Kyle Loeb. In his opening bout, Bak pinned the GV freshman in 51 seconds.
Bak posted three consecutive decision wins starting with a 4-1 win over Upper Perkiomen sophomore Daniel Rodenberger. A 6-1 triumph over West Chester Rustin freshman Corey McQuiston followed by a 6-2 win over CB South sophomore Mike Mathis which earned Bak a second trip to states in as many seasons. James medaled in the tournament a year ago at Hershey’s Giant Center.
Council Rock South was the team champion with 132 points. The Golden Hawks crowned three regional champs including sophomore 125-pounder Matt Rappo (37-8), along with senior 152-pounder Jim Vollrath (39-1) and 160-pounder Ed Shupe (36-3). All three were also district champions.
Rappo captured his regional trophy with a 5-2 win over Quakertown junior Colin Bynum. Vollrath took his with a 2-1 win over Owen J. Roberts senior Nick Fuschino and Shupe took his after pinning North Catholic senior Kevin Mallon in the semis followed by an 11-3 decision over Plymouth Whitemarsh sophomore John Staudenmayer.
In addition, senior 145-pounder Marc Helfrich (33-8) and junior 171-pounder Bobby Lavelle (33-11), also district champions in their respective weight classes, fell to the runner-up position at regionals.
In their regional title bouts, Helfrich lost a major decision to Pennridge senior Colin McConnell and Lavelle got tech-falled by Penncrest senior Jim Resnick, The 171-pounder for Penncrest was later named Outstanding Wrestler at the tournament after winning his weight class.
Meanwhile, CR South sophomore Matt Martoccio (22-3) placed third at 130 pounds. After winning his first two bouts, Martoccio dropped a close decision to Boyertown junior Alex Pellicciotti, who went on to take the regional title.
Matt wrestled his way back however, taking a 5-0 decision from Oxford Area junior Kyle Moran and a 1-0 win from Pennridge sophomore Rich Jasinski.
All six wrestlers for the Hawks have qualified for the PIAA championships, which start Thursday, March 5 at the Giant Center in Hershey and continue through to March 7.
CR North senior Zac Haynes, the Indians’ only district champion, captured the regional prize at 119 pounds, only this time was joined by North junior Jamie Callender, who captured regional gold at 189.
